Manufacturer's Velocity Ratings for Air Guns.

It is important that airgunners realize that the velocity figures published by the various airgun manufacturers may be optimistic or at least have been generated using highly tuned air guns in the finest possible condition and/or with light weight pellets and that the average airgun with other pellets may not achieve the published velocities.

That being said, the degree of optimism varies widely among the various airgun manufacturers. In general, the top German-made air guns produce velocities closest to the advertised ratings. Next come the English and the better Spanish manufacturers. However, many of the Chinese made air guns have been found to advertise velocities up to double the actual performance of the rifle. Few people ever realize the performance gap exists, largely because the cheaply made asian guns are so loose that the vibration and noise give the inexperienced shooter an impression of high power.

Actually, number of factors affect the pellet velocity which will be achieved by a particular air gun. All other factors being equal, air guns will shoot a light weight pellet at higher velocity than a heavy pellet. Pellets of the same weight may give different velocities if they differ in their ability to seal the barrel or have different diameters, bearing surfaces or coatings. An airgun will certainly NOT shoot ALL pellets at the SAME velocity, published or otherwise. An example of this effect was noted in our testing with a .177 caliber air rifle rated at 1000 ft/sec; average muzzle velocity was 1030 ft/sec using Beeman Silver Bear pellets and 728 ft/sec with the much heavier Silver Arrow pellet. This does not mean that one should avoid the use a heavier pellet. However, understanding these changes will help in selecting the proper table to be used for predicting the pellet path and any sighting changes needed. As a rule of thumb, it is safer to assume that your actual pellet velocity will be a bit less than manufacturer's published figures and reduce the figure a bit more as pellet weight increases.
